Getting my ducks in a row...

even if you cut out all the cats the pond would not really be big enough for the pbass in the long run, 6' sounds like a lot of swimming room but when there are several fish almost half as long as the pond is wide it really isnt much room at all, especially during feeding time

Are you goin to dig the 300g stock tube in ground or leave it above ground? why not just build a pond with a liner then you can do any size your want? heating a pond is not cheep but keeping it tropical all winter now thats a new challenge. lots of insulation and a solid cover will help alot with heat in the winter

when it comes to filtering a pond. lowes has filters of all sizes for ponds. if you build a 500g pond buy a 1000+ filters/pump. filtration and water circulation for outdoors pond isn't hard @ all. those heaters are kinda hard to find but i know there out there. just got to watch and make sure its not just a deicer. your wantng to keep fish that belong in the amazon. so keeping water 75-85 is a must imo. i would @least bump this thing up to 10 ft sq and about 5 ft deep. thats about 3,000 gallons and you will have some happy fish. and could put pretty much ne thing you want in there. last thing you wanna do is build this thing and later down the road wish you'd have went bigger. i'd dig the hole with a bobcat or something. and maybe line it all with some sprayfoam for insulation and lay pond liners or that wetsuit liquid rubber type stuff. i would also consider some kinda of cover for it when it snows up there. if heating is an issue you could always stock it with musky, sturgeon, trout, etc...fish that dont mind getting cold. ;) i just think its going to be hard keeping south american fish outside in new york. got family in conneticut i know what winters like up there lol.

I would invest the money in putting a green house over top of the pond to aid in the heating. With as cold as it gets in NY it would pay off in the long run. As for other forms of heating I would look in to something like a pellet stove to keep the ambient air temp high.

A greenhouse sounds like a great idea, especially if it's like a rain forest - that would really make the pond something else entirely :)

The pond is 6' in diamter by 2' tall, however I found a 920 Gallon tub that is 106" in diameter and 29" tall, which I think I will go with instead. I am basing my insulated box of another monsterfishkeeper on this sight, I will try to do an outline and post it on here. The voyage will begin when I graduate and get my grad money, so after the 25th. Would a Tig be able to live in a pond that size?
