if you want to handle your animal take your time if it bites you or whips you don't put it down just yet. I know it sounds bad but if you put it down every time it hurts you, it will learn it works and you will have to work that much harder in the future

Clearly you've never worked with monitors... Or at least not healthy ones. If you don't put a healthy monitor down when it bites you, it will just bite again, but harder.
It works much better to establish a trusting relationship with the animal, rather than trying to make it give up...
