Getting new Cichlids to eat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just realized I left out a detail, there are a few plants in the tank for now till they get eaten, and I assume they are helping keep the nitrates at 0. I just checked, all 3 at 0 still.

Also note that there are 20 small fish eating voraciously in the tank already. Also note that the big cichlids for some reason haven't eaten the mosquito fish.

Keep us updated. Would also like to see a picture. 500 gal sounds awesome.
My cichlids would never allow a mosquito fish to live. I have a livingstonni that makes short order of anything that fits it it’s mouth followed by a didiochromis that is an equally relentless hunter.

The darker and brighter side of the tank looks better IRL, doesnt take pics well at all.

Very nice. I have never kept driftwood with my Africans. I always thought it lowered the PH. To be honest I don’t see any fish that look excessively skinny.

I am trying to keep the PH under 8 so that the non african fish have a shot, but even with the wood its still strongly over. Very hard water here, and lots of limestone in the tank.

Certainly everyone looks healthy now, but eventually I think even fat fish need to eat to survive ;)

I don’t think parameters are why they’re not eating. I’ve seen haps eat under pretty bad conditions. If the parameters were bad enough to stop them from eating, you’d see other signs like heavy breathing and poor coloration If it’s not MB, it may just be the stress of the move. The food I recommended isn’t a medication, its safe for using as a staple and has enough medication to work as a preventative and to possibly cure MB at the start. Try the garlic additive, that’s always worked, but I’d wait until Sunday to feed again. I’ve had new vics go two weeks before they started eating.

This could be the problem and why it is important to keep fish that have the same requirements in ph and hardness. I’d actually test rather than guess.

Why would you assume I'm guessing. pH is 8.25 per freshly calibrated new probe and backed up by test kit
