Getting some RBP's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am getting about 10 2" red bellies, I have a 125 that they will go into eventually, by themselves, but wanted to place them in a grow out until they get a little more size.

I had a few questions
Is a 40 breeder ok for a grow out until they get around 4 inches?
how many should I want to end up with in the 125?
what should I feed them and how much do they eat?
about how fast do they grow?

thanks for any help. I'm sorry if this is posted somewhere, but hey, what's the point of an active forum if we are only directed to reading already existing pages?

1. no a 40 gal wont be good for 10
2. number can partly be by personal preference, but 8 is a good number.
3. feed them live fish only. even if you somehow managed to get them to eat frozen or non-live food, i wouldn't suggest it, as they are predators and you have to let the predators be predators. a single RBP at about 3" eats 2 rosies a day.
4.mine has grown from 2" to 5.5" in 8 months. that depends on tank cleanliness and feeding too. also fish happiness.

Looks like you have some learning to do also.

obviously, no two people have the same opinion on how to keep rbp's, which makes it very difficult to follow any advice. I have never run into so much contradiction on advice in a fish forum. almost seems like piranha are a ymmv kind of thing

don't just follow any advise blindly, read what everyone has to say, do some research yourself and think about what's really best for the fish you decide to care for (hopefully long term). the learning experience is part of the hobby.
