my friend picked up a cockatiel and had it forever so he thought now im more expeirenced ill get something cooler so he got an african grey(i know its not on the list of birds you want) africans are extremely smart...and bite hurt like hell we had to use our motorcycle gloves when he first got him. and even then he bite through my friends leather harley gloves...ridiciulous... but anyway that thing demanded more time then he had so he sold it to someone who had a bunch of birds...long story short birds arent just feathery things you throw in a cage(or eat in O's case up there :) ) as long as you do research and make an educated decision on what bird is right for you and not decied based on size and colors you should be fine...good luck with your decision process. and post pics when you get which ever you choose...

Really the african gray was that aggressive:eek: . My family picked up an African Gray from a breeder on our vacation in Florida last August. He's been an angel ever since. He is a pain in the ass about getting food all over, but he's very cute. He love to cuddle up to me and If I stop petting him he will give me an affectionate nip:) . Overall a great bird so just wanted to share my experience with them. Good luck with your amazon

I'm purchasing the Cage pretty soon here, Its designed for Amazons, and other Parrots Like Greys. It's a really ncie cage that even opens from the top. I've found out that my breeder has sold off all of there Amazon breeding stock to work with other birds, so I'm going to get a Timneh African Grey. They are a little smaller then the Congo greys, and are better suited to be pets as they do well with families. :)

I have a mess of avian friends. Just a simple tip. You may want to start with a conure or something that size. Amazon's are large and if one ever bites you, it is likely you will not want to keep birds ever again. lol. Birds in general are like children and demand attention.

Kory

Come on Kory you are going to have to get a bigger cage. there is no way that the glass will be big enough once she has grown:ROFL:

I raised birds for a lot of years and in all that time I learned a very importiant fact.

The wonderful...well behaved bird that attracts you to the hobby is the result of a LOT of training and effort on the part of the owner. They don't come pre-trained and they make VERY VERY poor part time pets.

I know this, I have talked to a few breeders and have joined forums (such as Africangrey.com) Its the reason why I want a parrot. Its a life long companion that, unlike a dog or cat that rarely lives to 20 years. They are excelent companions if trained right.

Everything about Parrots is amazing to me. They are just to cool. Same with fish and reptiles, they just amaze me.

I know its a big repsonsibility, but I am up to it. ;)

I thank everyone for the kind words.

For inspiration and to maybe speed up your search a little, here's a shot of my afore mentioned Mexican Red Headed Amazon, Chico...

Thats a nicer Amazon! I hear the Red's are the quietest species of Amazons.

I have found the cage I'm getting, its big enough to hold the parrot for life, only costs $216, and free shipping! Buying new perches from there as the ones that come with it look crappy, and buying a bunch of birdy toys aswell.

The breeder I plan to buy from is located in my state, its really awesome. I dont know if they have birds available, as they havent mailed me back yet.

Will be getting my African Timneh Grey before school starts for sure.

Thank you for the modification of your signature.:)

Exotic birds...personally I think they are annoying and filthy creatures. To each his own I guess. So the plans for the Arowanas and 375 gallon tank, have been put to rest?

yes my friends was not hand raised and was purchased at 8months and he was a dick ...he loved to bite...and he hated pets on the back of the head...i dont think he was handled much before my friend got him...

Thanks, but when he needs attention, he'll almost make your ears bleed.
