getting the hump!!

just wondered at what stage peoples midas/midevils get their nuchal humps? my biggest male is well over 12in and rules my set up. he`s a bit of a glass banger too....but he has no hump at all! my male red devil/midevil is around 8in+ and is "second in command" he does have a very small bump above his eyes at the base of his "slope" I just wondered if some can be just very late developers, or if in fact some males will never even get the hump?
 
Some never have it.
 
I know some people believe that contact with females of the same or similar species can speed up hump development. No idea if this is actually true. Thoughts?

The nuchal hump on a midas is a hormonal response, and anything that triggers testosterone will also increase the size of the hump on a sexually mature Midas. Whether its putting a mirror in the tank for him to beat up or giving it a parter to dominate or breed with. Genetics will determine the maximum size of the hump but all male Midas should get one when they are ready to spawn. Side note, females do not get nuchal humps in the wild, only in private aquaria do they get the humps. The reason for females producing excess testosterone in private aquaria is a mystery to me, but I'm sure someone more experienced than myself knows the answer to that.

I have a female with a bigger hump than several of my males.

And not all males get humps, even breeding. Those with more RD in them, i guess . They at most get a slight protuberance....
