Lately ive been reading alot of post about baby fire eels starving to death because they refuse to eat. One trick to get a fire eel to eat that may work is the "Bottle Trick".
REMOVE ALL HIDING PLACES FROM TANK (Tubes, rocks, decorations, ect)
Get a glass bottle, beer bottle, soda bottle ect and place different food items into bottle, live prepared ect.. This should give the eel no other choice but to hide inside the bottle and possibly eat. This is a proven method that may work for newly acclimated eels that refuse to eat.. Especially fire eels!!!

Thanks for posting this. I just got a approx 4" "elver" recently and have been trying to hand feed and free feed the tank. It's decided to hole up in this tubular area I have at the back of my heater. How long is it safe for them to go without eating? I waited about two months before I bought it from the lfs. I wanted to make sure it was eating well before I bought it. So far I have tried frozen bloodworms and krill. I just got some ghost shrimp too. I'm waiting on some red wrigglers to come in at my lfs. One more question - how long is it safe for an earthworm to be in the tank once I get one and put it in there? I appreciate any help I can get because I am stoked about this fire eel. They are super uncommon in my area.

If a worm isn't eaten take it out after an hour, max.

Try live black worms. They sell them at lots of big chain pet shops.

Can you give me a suggestion on the bottle? I'm guessing it needs to be glass? Maybe pics? Thanks alot for the help. My eel was poking it's head out of the top of the heater today, but when I lifted the egg crate to try and feed him he popped right back inside. *sigh* I will be happy when it's eating regularly and not so shy, but I know it may take some time.

I think plastic will sink if filled with water and you don't have to worry about cracking your tank
