OK because of this problem I have come up with a solution...please let me know what you think of this option....

I have a large (2 person) garden tub that never gets used. It gets plenty of lighting through several windows that border it (will post pics later) and we keep the house around 80 degrees. I am wanting to scrub out the tub (several times) very well and then silicone the drain shut, fill it up with a filtration divice (any one know about those small square pond filters?) and put her in there. She would have plenty of room to swim and plenty of surface area. Do you think this is viable? What would you use to make sure all the soap residue has been cleaned out (light bleach solution, rubbing alchohol)? And would you worry about a heater? Thanks you all...

I would put a heater in there because sitting tub water always gets cold. Also i wouldn't use a square pond filter. I would use a canister filter or a DIY 5 gallon bucket filter. The square pond filters in my experience get dirty really quick and will stress the pump if they are not kept clean. Some vinegar and lemon juice work great too. Make sure you post pictures of this project.

Great idea!

Like fote03 said vinegar is good as a final wash then rinse well several times. Get all around the top & walls too so nothing drips in.

Clean the drain area with alcohol before using the silicone.

In your case the square pond filter shouldn't get dirty very fast (hopefully there aren't alot of leaves falling in the tub there :D. As a matter of fact I'd suggest putting some poly-fil in it to help the filtering.

Problem with canister filters is they need to be 'X' amount of inches below the water level (check manufacturers rec.s).

Here's a link to the bucket filter http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34433&highlight=DIY+wet/dry , it can sit just above water level and you could just pretty it up a bit :D.

As far as the heater goes it's best to just test it (fill and check every day for a week). I don't know if they insulated the tub or not and cast vs steel vs fiberglass/plastic construction.

Keep us posted,

Dr Joe

Since the house will be kept at 80 degrees, the tub will also stay at 80 degrees. You don't need a heater unless you are keeping Yellowstone Spring fish.

That is because you are warm blooded. Anything less than 98.6 degrees will eventually feel cold. Fish are cold blooded and do not feel temperature if they are the same temp as their surroundings.

I'd leave the drain workable, would'nt it come in handy for w/c etc. Just put a small screen on it.

Tub drains don't always seal that well long term, but then you could make a drip system for it.
