Ghetto giant canister with pumps and buckets?

Have you thought about just buying a couple of OceanClear canisters to hook up to the pump and be done with it? They are plumbed for the same size plumbing and are awesome... I had the same pump hooked up to two of these cans and you can purge them.

Good idea, and probably what the person who had this thing before me did. The pump is prefitted with a T split, so I could run it into two filters. Short of dropping $160 that I'll never have, what other containers might work as canisters? I have saws, grinders and drills, so can do a bit of modification to, say, an oxygen tank or something like that. Any ideas in that neighborhood?

The main problem with DIY is that a lot of things have to be watertight and that requires precision manufacturing. All cannister filters have fairly sturdy bodies, a big O-ring in a precisely made groove, and heavy duty latches or similar for a watertight seal. You just can't do that with hand tools, you need a machine shop.

You could try finding a large cannister filter with a dead motor and use the external pump to push water through it. Remove the old impeller as it would likely only impede flow. It would have to be a heck of a cannister filter to take a 1200 gph pump though. Maybe a small pond filter?
