Ghost shrimp wtf?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Those look like the old feeder prawns i used to get... they would start clear when younger, but as they matured would get darker... kinda like what yours look like now...

They can also get pretty big if not eaten...

after i read this i went an inspected the ghost shrimp in my planted tank and noticed a variety of different shades, as well as the golden bands really standing out on a few of my larger guys.. they free roam and forage, as well as eat a mix of hikari pellets, flakes, and algae tabs i put in for the other guys so their diet is a mixture.. so i guess its more or less average to see the variations with the diff variables in each setup..

I was thinking you had prawn that were mistakenly labeled as ghost shrimp but that doesn't appear to be the case. If they get beyond 1.5" and become aggressive, look out. They may be prawn. The ghost shrimp at my local Petco look similar to what you have. The two red dots on the tail along with bands on the claws and front antennae seem typical.

Long arm shrimp will also be sold as ghost shrimp. If they start to get larger than 2 inches, you have orawn and they will soon rule the tank. They will eat anything they can catch, and trust me they will be like a guided missile.

Very sure they're not prawns. They've stayed under 2 inches. The biggest female is 1.8 inches. No prawns for me. If they were there's a RES Slider or two in my friends pond that would love them.
