Might set-up a 100 gal rubbermaid next summer. My uncle owns a bait shop and could probally get me set up with some shrimp direct shipped from the ponds/tanks they are raised in.

i live in tampa, fl. and i wonce got a water hardness test, the readings was completely OFF THE CHART. like louie said, its liquid cement.

Do you remember what your ph was?. I heard from friend in Delray his Ph is 8.4 .

Oh 100 gl is huge a kiddie pool of 30 gallons will give you hundreds if not thousands of ghost shrimps once they start spawning which is rather fast if you get healthy adults.

are you sure your buying ghost shrimp? could you actually be buying marsh grass shrimp(common shore)? they both look very similar and both go by palaemonetes sp. in the hobby

these little shrimp are harvested from saltwater for feeder and bait purposes. the supplier may be shipping them in under the name ghost shrimp when there not true freshwater species.

the freshwater species called ghost shrimp is Palaemonetes paludosus

there are atleast 5 more species in palaemonetes, i know 3 of them are marine.


i am unsure if any of the species are both fresh and salt.

You know that's true. There are several diff types of tiny ghost like shrimps in Florida . Some are brackish.

Pet stores sell them as feeders not pets thus imagine any type of mass collected shrimp makes its way into pet stores.

I have collected tons of little native fish,etc but have yet to see a single shrimp even in heavy populated tiny crayfish ponds.

i dont usually check the taps ph. but i remember in 1 of my tanks that had lots of driftwood, blackwater extract, and some parts RO water i managed to get it to like 7.5.

This certainly isnt discus breeding water lol.

Amazing how so many SA/CA cichlids breed in canals which have the PH of min Marine water or higher.
