Ghost Shrimp

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They can get to 2 inches, but I haven't personally seen them over about 1 inch.

Pets? I dunno....they don't exactly do that much, they're kind of boring as far as pets go, but you can keep them in a small aquarium easily. They're much more interesting to watch get eaten than keep as pets *shrug*.

most of them are 1 inch long at max. The females are the bigger ones and they will have red eggs under them. I have seen a monster one one time (about 2 inches) , but i used that as fishing bate on a trip once. that one was caught in brackish water as well.

The type of water you put them in might have something to do with the size. I know that they require brackish water for their eggs to actually hatch.

The shrimp generally sold in the U.S as ghost shrimp do not require brackish water. They breed all over the place here and there's no brackishwater to be found in southeast missouri.

Ghost shrimp max around 1.5" and the females don't have red eggs, they have green eggs. They breed very easily, but are cannibalistic. They aren't the best to be used for pets, there are many shrimps that are better looking, and better parents. Cherry shrimp for instance, or bumblebee shrimp, zebra shrimp, blueberry shrimp, crystal reds, amano shrimp, singapore shrimp, red spotted shrimp, dwarf shrimp, dark green shrimp, snowball shrimp, tiger shrimp, bee shrimp, green shrimp, sri lanka dwarf shrimp, indian whitebanded shrimp, Hawaiian red shrimp, red nose shrimp, yellow nose shrimp, ninja shrimp, etc. just to name a few. Man I feel like bubba.

One thing, they generally only live a year or two but in a tank with small fish they are interesting little additions, you just need to replace them periodically

the red egged ones are the marsh shrimps. Those are brackish. I can get tons of them at the salt marsh. They can be adapted to freshwater, but they will drop off one by one.

The green egged ghost shrimp are the true freshwater shrimps. However, they don't seem to do well in captivity. They are bred in large ponds down south to sell as live food.

I don't think Shrimps go good with Snails :[

My baby aquarium shrims ate all the snails O_O;; [Yes It's strange!]

I have a bigger tank with acouple bigger shrimps though, they were caught from SaltWater >_< Their about 2".. Very.. Active. >_<; And don't put any baby fishes in there with them.. :[ I learned my lesson.
