Ghost Shrimp

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have just under 30 of these guys in my tanks now. Have a few in all of the larger tanks to eat debris that falls to the bottom b/c they are cheaper than bottom feeders and for us, nicer looking. We have about 20 of them in our 33 gallon display tank cuz they are really neat to watch climbing all over the driftwood and rocks and they eat soft algae and dirt off our driftwood and plants. They also grow very rapidly and develop some small bands of colour when they are in good condition. All of ours developed some pink and white bands in certain areas once theyd been in our tanks long enough.

Our only complaint thus far has been our inability to get any babies out of them. One female with eggs exploded or something and the other we havent seen in ages. We'd like to raise some of the babies to use as feeders but havent had much luck yet. They are good with our small fish, even fry, and because they crawl, theyre fun to watch as something different in the tank.

I forgot to mention, they're really cheap, and don't add much to the bio-load so you can go wild and get lots. The only problem is usually finding and LFS that hasnt sold out yet :).

just get em! lol. i luv em as well. kinda neat watchin them swim by. not only that but the kids luv looking for them. turns out to be a daily exercise.

Ghost shrimp are cool

I have a gigantic 2 1/4 inch ghost shrimp. I think they make great pets if you like pets that live for only a year. It's funny to watch them steal the catfish food from the unsuspecting catfish. However, I wouldn't get them twice. I got ghost shrimp because it was a new aquarium, and the bamboo shrimp I wanted needed an aquarium that had been running for 6 months.

I've heard that ghost shrimp will kill Red Cherry Shrimp, Crystal Red Shrimp etc is that true? I unfortunately (or maybe not) bought some and threw them in my tank while i was waiting for the RCS and CRS to show up at my LFS and since learned that they tend to kill them. Now the RCS and CRS have arrived and I'm not sure if I should pick them up...

Has anyone had experience with this?

Ghost shrimp are awesome pets! They are my kids' favorites because they watch too much Scooby Doo ("G-G-G-Ghosts!!!" and they "fly like helicopters"). Many of the Ghosties I have will come up to the surface when I feed and eat floating flakes off the surface upside down. Sure they aren't the most interesting shrimp they're the cheapest and hardiest. It's fun to watch them eat and clean and watch the food pass through them.

Ultimately, they are cockroaches of the sea, but they will keep a tank clean. Once you've had a gang of them in a tank they won't get eaten in and they are comfortable with the other inhabitants, they are fearless. Some of my ghosties will climb onto my pleco and clean her too!

But I haven't hatched any or more likely I did and they were eaten - like another poster said they are cannibalistic and horrible parents. Plus if you don't like 'em anymore they are LOVED by many fish as a treat!
