I was at Petco a few hours ago and they had these bettas they were calling giant bettas. They were HUGE! (For a betta of course). Very very thick thick body. A good 4" long. It wasn't necessarily the length that threw me of but the strange thickness of the fish. Not fat at all. No belly on these fish. Just THICK! It had a little color on it. Modest size finnage comparable to a plakat maybe just a little bit more finnage though. Are these those supposedly community friendly/peaceful betta species? I had heard that most betta species are actually very friendly and multiple males can be kept together. Just not for B. splendens.

I read about the breeder who first produced the Giant betta. Out of thousands they breed they noticed 1 that was bigger then all the others. They bred that male with there biggest female then could find and got the Giant Betta.They don't breed completely true. You'll get some giants with some normal size. But with constant select breeding you can breed Giant bettas.
There are a number of betta species sometimes called giants, B channoides, B anabantoidae, maybe others.
Although they don't have the man induced electric colors or finnage, I find these much more interesting than B spendens.
I keep B albimarginata a mouthbrooder, and B edithae, neither would even remotely be considered giants though, and can be kept in groups.

I wouldn't get them. Either your serial murderous bn will kill them, or you will make them morbidly obese!
Imagine how much bigger the teeth would be on a "Giant Betta" Biggles should watch out incase that BN tells the betta about the sweet taste of human flesh
