That sucks. Hey i have another ques. What would make a betta just start to grow fuzz? I know what your thinking, FUZZ??? Yes fuzz. We have only had one fish survive the fuzz and the dosing of formulin. We just can't figure out how it starts in the first place.

Formalin is pretty toxic stuff. We use it at my job as a preservative. The fuzz is a fungal infection. Try doing more frequent waterchanges and make sure there is no leftover food when you feed. It is possible he scratched himself on something and it started growing fungus, buy fungus will only usually grow if the water is dirty.

I have had good success with Melafix for fungus. If it is really bad I take some NoxIch or QuickCure on a Q-tip and dab it onto the fungus (it is very toxic if overdosed, so I usually net the betta and hold the net over another bowl before dabbing NoxIch of QuickCure on). After the fungus falls off I like to dose the water with Melafix until the sore heals over. The neat thing about Melafix is it contains Tea Tree Oil which kills fungus and bacteria and also helps his skin heal really fast. I use it also if the male and female have torn eachother up a bit during breeding. I am amazed at how quickly the fins grow back when I use it. Also, since it is not widely used, most bacteria and fungus are not immune to it yet, unlike Tetracyclene, etc.

Isn't the gaint Betta a hybird? I know that it's fro two differnt groups of betta one being Akarensis group from borneo the other spices being breviobesus I beleave. I could be plum off base with that but I had just always heard the gaint being a hybird of the larger group of betta's and that they was being considered by the IBC as a hybrid.
I have two Macrostoma bettas that you can't get imported no more. I just happened on to them at a flee market in florda. I have tryed breeding them only once as the male did some much damage to the fmale I didn't want to go and kill her. So I've never tryed breeding them again. Althou I have thought about it. LOL
