That is the Mekong Giant Catfish, and while there are breeding programs in place, they are still critically endangered thanks to overfishing and pollution.

The fish called "basa" is the iridescent shark, which yes, are very common, and I could go a few minutes away to the LFS and pick one up for a few bucks if I so desired.
They are both in the family Pangasiidae, which is why they look similar.
