Giant Gold Gourami!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its a very common misconception that gar are an aggressive fish. the only really aggressive one is the alligator. I have a spotted and a florida. They are both harmless unless they can eat it. and with their slender snouts, they really only eat elongated fish like shiners. you'll notice in the bottom right of my full tank shot, there is a school of about 20 previously quarantined shiners. they are healthy feeders and for as long as they last, they get fed a good flake food. makes for a real good staple food for the gar.

and yes, when everyone is adult, they will all be kept in the same tank. at that point, the biggest fish will probably be the arowana and gourami. captive florida and spotted gar rarely go over the 2ft mark.

You are right about the gars - however, with the Alligator, each is different. I have one that is just as docile and calm, and friendly, as my others.

update!

as of last night, the black belt cichlid was giving the new gourami a little bit of a hard time. but by this time today, the black belt has forgotten about him and just contentedly plays with his shell and the gourami is cruising the tank next to the arowana

ohh, i thought all gars are aggressive. maybe it's because they only sell alligator gar here, im a stranger to the spotted and florida one hahah. i was about to ask u the fish on the bottom. and i just noticed tht ure gar is too small for the gg. xD

it seems tht ure gg is getting along real quick. :) good job. wht r u feeding it now?

Thanks! the GG is doing real well on koi and cichlid pellets. I'm going to start trying with peas and stuff to see how it acts towards them

A very small Giant Gourami like that will certainly not trouble your other fish. GG's are one of the commonest species here in Malaysia - grown as foodfish (apparently delicious "sweet and sour", but I only eat seafish), wild type in most waterways, very large ones common in temple ponds, and dirt cheap in aquarium shops (your size in three colour forms, is 5 MYR, about 1.6 US$). I am keeping a 6 inch one with smaller Trichopterus gouramis, a Black Knifefish and a couple of big Angelfish without any trouble. In garden ponds here they are even kept with Gambusia and Guppies, and 3 - 6 inch Tilapia without any problems. It would be impossible for anything but a large GG to bother an Arrowana - the opposite is more likely - I see dozens of Arrowana of all sizes every day and the only fish that come off worse are anything kept with an Asian Arrowana.

awesome fish! i'm dying to find one here in Boston, MA at a LFS but no luck still. Hoping to find a red tail and now since i seen your gold one, i want a gold GG as well. How much did it cost you?
