I currently have one common grey Giant Gourami in a four foot tank which I bought in March of this year and going to upgrade to a 6 x 2 x 2 aquarium in the autumn. He is currently 4 inches and feeding weel on prima, mysis, bloodworm and pellet food. My favourite fish by far! Id say you should be ok if you keep any decor to an absolute MINIMUM!!! Just a tiny layer of sand, as this fish is extremley deep and thick. But I would persaonnly say to get a 5ft aquarium for one. As they are from the Ant family they rely on breathing atmopheric air and noramlly live in slow sluggish waters so again they're not a fast moving tankbuster such as a Pangasius Catfish. I find that they are also fairly slow growing so expect a growth spirt every so often. I'd persoanlly say you should just get away with it for three years in a 5ft aquarium with very limited decor. As for tankmates have mine with a Six Banded Distichodus, a Royal Knife fish and a Fire Eel. Will only plan to keep both Giant Gourami and Fire Eel togther.
Best of luck!!!
Amazing fish
