Very cool that they found it. Now all they have to do is leave it be.
Or catch a copple of babys, send them to Varanio and he will start a ex-situ conservation plan:D

no not mine, i hear they are VERY difficult to keep healthy in captivity unless you can get that specific fruit that they eat. i don't think it's something people can eat so it's hard to find.

i do keep an ionides and a dumiril's! nice lizards!

Okay thanks I asked as never saw one before.

Yes this animal is related to mabitang olivaceous, however this animal was kept a secret for some time due to its unknown numbers and the peculiar way it was discovered. It was discovered in a highly human populated area ! No thanks ill pass on these wayyyyy to much to handle given its specialist diet.

if im not mistaken, you are referring to the black frugivorous monitor, Varanus mabitang, also from the philippines.

varanus olivaceus, varanus mabitang and now varanus bitatawa, thanks!

I saw a special on the Discovery channel earlier this week that was talking about this monitor! Don't remember what it was called though...

are you sure you didn't see 'Butaan: The Lost Dragon' a documentary about varanus olivaceus aka butaan lizard, aka gray's monitor? i think it might be a bit too soon for a documentary to have already come out about these new lizards, but i have been wrong before... i think.

Daniel Bennett is a biologist who is considered the world's foremost authority when it comes to monitor lizards. he believes if these lizards have any chance of being preserved, it will be in captivity because of the current state of their wild habitat. so catching a few while we still can is a good idea!

Actually it was the Butaan that I saw. I git the name mixed up (hey, I'm on painkillers, give me a break ;)).

The biologist was Daniel Bennet. And they were still fruit eating monitors.

Wouldnt it be possible to switch it a bit to more comon fruits, I bet they would acept stuff like mango, papaya, prinkly pear, etc.
