I have seen these at petstores and was tempted to buy them. do they just stay in ball for or is it just java moss or somthing made to grow like a ball? if its java moss I will buy one tear it apart and plant it in my aquarium:D thnks

If there labeled Japanese balls then they're just java moss wrapped around but real marimo balls r algae that stay jn a ball

^ yeah ive seen them for sale at my local petsmart and i believe they are real marimo balls.

Do they get big?

I have had mine for almost a year and and they have not been growing in my planted tank while all other plants were growing. that being said, they are easy to maintain as long as you don't have anything that will tear them up. my cichlids tore them in half when a food pellet got into it.

hmmm damn I need to get my hands on some java moss. they are real marimo moss balls. i guess my Idea of tearing one apart wouldn't be good. ill just get some moss of the internet.

well i thought the moss balls were java moss cause i saw one that was starting to disperse at a freinds house guess it was a java moss ball

Pretty easy to tell them apart...even if you dont know plants. Marimo balls are solid algae & they sink, whereas java moss balls are wrapped around styrofoam & they float. My marimo balls are about a year old. Good color, but no growth. They get up to like 12 inches in Japanese ponds where they come from.
