giant otter catches arapaima

Otter is a mammal, so right there it has a better brain and the upper hand against a scaled fish . Hahahah go mammals.

bull sharks like shallow water and the shark can breath underwater, the otter can't all it would take is a quick bite from below (like they attack seals) and there would be all kinds of dead otter.

But when sharks attacks seals, like at Shark Alley in South Africa. The sharks attack from below in deep water. This line of attack would not be possible in a river system. Also, the turning ability and maneuverability of an otter would out class any shark that didn't have a surprise attack. The obstacles in a river system such as the amazon, logs, trees, branches and sandbanks would definitely give the otter the upper hand I feel.

On top of all of this, the otters are not solitary creatures and rely quite heavily on group participation for protection and detection of predators. If the otters were that easy for bull sharks to catch would they not come to get them more frequently instead of a few isolated incidences perhaps?

completly agree with you. The otters are much more agile than a shark. And we should not forget that the otters know their area very well. The shark can´t do his surprise attack in the shallow waters of the amazon. On the other hand Otters are high intelligent and social animals while bullsharks are dumb as bread. The alpha female of any otter clan will never accept such a predator in her clans territory. Chances are high that as soon the bullshark is spotted a pack of otters will hang on it, rip open the gills and destroy the fins.

That's kinda bias against the fish, and reptiles. The other top predators arn't just going to sit like blind targets and get killed. The otter may have intelligence, but mindless brute force can be just a great of an asset. Mindless brute force has one instinctive tactic, not clean, not intelligent, but highly effective. With intelligence the tactics become more advance and opens more opportunities but creates more room for error. One fatal mistake by an novice or aged otter and it's all over. You just need that one that messes up the whole plan.

It's either the otters gets enough blows into the fish or the fish delivers one fatal wound into the otter. I'm more proud to say im related to the "dumb as bread" bull shark than saying i'm related to the "high intelligent and social" aquatic weasle, but (Unfortunately) of course I know the latter is closer like it or not. I guess im just a traitor among mammals.

Well since those otters kill anacondas in packs i´m sure a bull shark is no match for them. An anaconda is much stronger and much more agile than a bull shark. Also sharks are exhausted very fast.

Hmm there are few problems with some posters' posts.

First giant otters deal with only smaller caimans and not adult black caimans. Second, there is no evidence of giant otter in the picture captured an arapaima especially with the boat in the picture.

Third, Honey badgers and giant otters do not get anything whatever they want as there are few records of lions and jaguars prey on them. Im sure that an adult bull shark is safe from giant otter packs.

an adult bull shark could not even come close to the areas which hose otters inhabit. beside that...i always stand on the side of my mammal brothers ha ha
