At full adult size, you dish out a lot of fish for them. In the wild, they feed on anything from fish to small mammals (like monkeys) and birds.

And the rumors of people keeping them in smaller tanks just aren't true. You can't keep a 10 foot fish well in a 10 foot long tank. It just doesn't work. Sure, you'll hear "Mine didn't get that big"..... but that's because you aren't keeping it correctly.

And I forgot to mention one MAJOR thing. If you are in the US and are going to keep one GET THE PAPER WORK. If you're caught without it, you will go directly to jail - do not pass GO, do not collect $200. Oh, and they take your fish and fine you as well.

They are a CITES protected animal (app. II). Not to mention all the US federal regulation and state regulation on them.

Emi - sorry, this may be the one topic I can out talk you on! :D

mr.T1karmann;I could care less what you think about my tank being to small.I have spent the last 20 years going to the Amazon rain forest researching everthing I could about the life of arapaims.I have lived with many different Caboclas and watch them spear and net them for the fish markets.I have gained alot of knowledge about them.I have also seen them being bred in small ponds in Brazil and Peru.I also have kept them in other large tanks. As far as the C.I.T.E.S.license that is no problem. They are being bred in Brazil in giant shallow lakes for the fish markets and for export to the aquarium trade.

arapaimas are best but in ponds, even if you put in the aquarium its the matter of time before they out grow it

well maybe im different to you but if i had done as much resurch as you say you have and seen this great fish in its natural habitat then im sure i would have worked out buy now that they are best left in the wild were they belong

you say you have seen them being bred in large shallow lakes which i would say is much larger than a 12,000 gal pond so whats your point
