I think small tanks, and the aro's swimming back wards is a culprit for the cause as well. Prolly a mix of a few things.
It's tank is big enough, it did go through a stage of sitting on the bottom. I saw it's gill membrane start to curl in a day, right after a water change, (with aged treated water).
But yes i agree probably a whole load of reasons why gill curl can occur.
