I searched, didnt find much, tried google, not much there either. I have a RTC (on a "lease" program) It appears he has gill curl. Now i only found out about gill curl on accident reading another forum. I would say its "bad"? gill curl. I have had him since he was about 3 inches, but never bothered to check when it got it. The water it is in, IS good, and has never dropped below medium in quality, and id like to say that it wasnt in that water for any length of time. My question is, what is the cure, if there is 1. I am NOT doing any surgery to the fish. its about 6-7 inches right now, at 10-12 i will be selling it. ("lease" program) I would like to say that it will go to a very responsible owner who may be able to do surgery, but i will let it go to the first decent person who can find a proper home for it at that size. I need to know, how can i cure it, if i can cure it. What is the downsides to it having it. Assuming its the WORST it can be, how will this fish live the rest of its life, and lastly, should i let it live the rest of its life. /ramble

It needs clean water if there is any chance of reversing it. What tank size and actual water perams would be helpful saying medium quality really doesn't help. Gill curl is caused by poor water quality, which in with rtc's is normally caused by 1. Small tank and 2. Inadequate filtration and maintenance. Sometimes it can be corrected if treated with frequent water changes. So just post up the info I asked for and hopefully we can help ya out

pics uploadin as we speak, i do not have actual parameters, but i get my water tested at the LFS (droplet test) and they always say its great. reputable LFS, no bs over there. its crystal clear, and the HOB aqueon 55 filter gets a pretty long life out of the cartridges. Fed massivore and shrimp pellets.

Ok well your problem is that your way under filtered. Especially in the biological area. For example. I used a emperor 400 and a aquen 55(full of bio media) just for my 10gal when mine was under 4". So adding a extra filter or 2 will help. Also doesn't look bad so I THINK more frequent water changes could correct it. How often do u do water changes now and how much each time. Tis info will give me a idea of what needs to be changed

I dont have a schedule per say, its 15 gallons at least once a week, usually if i have some spare time ill change the water (in case i get busy) Unfortunately for me, i have to siphon into a big drum, and fill with a pitcher since the sinks dont take a siphon. I can do up to 15 gallon changes. The only extra filter i have is a crappy 10, so if i do have to go out and buy another, id like to get a good one, rather than have to rig up a bunch of stuff.

the stock list is a albino frog, 12 inch gibby pleco, this 6-7 RTC, and a 12 in perunno thinger (for sale)

Id like to also add that his gill curl, is "moody" there are moments when he is panting at the bottom and looks terrible, and times where he looks fine, to the point where i question if he has it at all. Its also worth noting that i dont want to spend TOO much money on this fish, because i dont keep RTCs past 1 foot, and less if i can do it. I enjoy the fish as its my favorite fish there is, but i cannot house an adult, so i get them as babies, and grow them to toddlers, than repeat. This is almost as "dirty" as the tank will get.

You can always build your own sump for cheap. Otherwise a canister or a few more hob filters especially if you plan on buying small ones in the future. They really do need clean water and a 55 hob in a 55 isn't enough for more than your pleco
