but the fix is easy for unhealthy overcrowded step up the water change regime, further I would prefer to take people at their word and then let them fail on their own rather than take a preemptive judgement stance on them, it tends to give people encouragement to do the right thing when they are met with a I believe you can do this rather than a I doubt you can do it.

I have seen the deals that are to be had in california as people have posted threads here about them and I for one believe that a person who has purposed to find that big tank will find it and they will find it at a price that is within their budget.

I would prefer to give people the hand up to help them rather than the armbar to put them down.

It is my hope that you find that big tank you are looking for and that your fish need.

I recommend seachem prime as a water treatment since it is such a kicking product and to fix the issue you are having bump up your water change by 5% in volume to see if that works to help your water quality. I do this for my waterchange regime, 3 weeks of the month its 30-40% but for the 4th week its a 50% so as to give the tank a killer freshness. I would also recommend that you do a minimum monthly cleaning of your filter body, by this I mean move out the media and keep it alive in tank water then using the hottest water you can stand sterilize your filter body but not the baskets that hold your media, make sure the impeller is free and clear to work at max then put the filter back together.

So I've cured gill curl without surgery. Depending on how far along the problem is you can follow this method, and avoid hurting you little guy. If the gill curl has not advanced to the gill plate, and is still only on the soft part you can massage it away. Catching my TSN was the hardest part. I drained the water down to where he could only swim side to side. I used a towel to catch him as a he has outgrown my net. :)

Anyways, I put some of the tank water in a rubber maid tub, added some erythromycin (a strong broad spectrum antibiotic), and prime to help with the loss of slime coat. He finally settled down enough that he would let me support his with one hand and massaged the curled flap of skin between my index finger and my thumb. You need to get under the flap with your thumb, but not too far in so you don't damage anything. I was just really gentle and would rub for a few seconds and then let him breath. Eventually the gill laid back down. You can feel the gill flap get thinner and thinner between your fingers as it starts to flatten out. I made sure the water was nice and clean and kept prime in the tank while he was healing. Anyways, this was like 3 months ago. He's doing great and the gill curl hasn't come back. I didn't put any antibiotics, just in the tub so that I didn't introduce any bacteria.

By the way, this all got started from an ammonia spike after a tank broke and a bunch of fish had to be added all at once. Once the curling started it continued to get worse until I did this, even though the ammonia never went back up.

Good luck!

Where do you get erythromycin ?

Erythromycin can be found at fish stores in different forms ranging from capsules to tablets that all dissolve in water. I think I used Maracyn under the brand name Mardel, but it doesn't really matter. It is convenient in that this can be found at petco or petsmart. It is a little more advanced than penicillin, but not over the top so that you start breading any sort of super bugs. Another one you can use is amoxicillin, but I might wait to use that for serious infections. Another really great topical antibiotic is neomycin. This can also be found at fish stores, but usually a little harder to come by. This is one of the ingredients in Neosporin, but please don't use that! It would cover the gills and suffocate the fish.:WHOA: So, of all three of these, I would probably use the erythromycin being that it is about the right spectrum and easy to find in the right dosage forms for small amounts of water. Let me know if you have problems finding it. :)
