I personaly think it depends on the waterquallity or disolved oxygen in the water it is raised in.
Mine is over 3 feet and still has his external gills. (+/- 1.2 cm long ext. gills)
The other one I got (i got it when it was a little older) has non.
I'm also curious on what others have to say about this.

my lung fish is roughly 16 inches...maybe 17" now and he still has a bit of external gills...about a cm...same as when i got him at 8"
