You should get a buntch of those unusual ones and start a selective breeding program, could unleash some pretty cool genetics.

Nice pictures. I have been to a few Florida springs in the last year and it never gets old to look at pictures from there. I also love the turtles you posted. By the way: The scientific name of those is Sternotherus minor. Do you have underwater shots of the spring? Where is it exactly located?

i think im coming to stay with u for a wknd when im next out lol

it is in central FL around High springs. it's a great place. I am working on saving up for an underwater casing for the camera but no, I do not have any shots of it right now....

Interesting about the name, I have always learned them as Kinosternum but i learned it via AZA which has a tendency to be out of date.

haha, let me know when you are this side of the pond and I will show the good places to hunt.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the advice on the locality. As I have said I have been in central Florida a few times, but always only for a limited amount of time and more than once I visited springs that are basically just like public swimming pools with no wildlife around - so it's good to know where to go.

The name changed a few years ago. Nowadays scientists discriminate between muD and muSK turtles, the first ones being Kinosternon sp. and the latter ones are named Sternotherus (like the common stinkpot S. odoratus, the loggerhead S. minor and the razorbacks S. carinatus and not to forget S. depressus)

I don't know how high your photographic standards are, but for underwater pictures my Olympus stylus 1030 SW is more than enough. It's a 30ft waterproof digital camera that doesn't need a water proof housing and doesn't cost a fortune. Link: http://reviews.photographyreview.com/blog/olympus-stylus-1030-sw-preview/
