We're going to put him in his own tank with proper water. It's a 10g, and then we'll have to decide later whether we can fit something larger (I have 5 other tanks already) or sell him to a good home.
He has black marks on the side of his mouth right now, as if he smeared his face with some charcoal. Is that normal? Sign of something bad? This was not there this morning.
I think puffers are great. As for me, I got attached real quick. I think they are one of the cutest fish out there.
It seemed really hard at first to keep a GSP, esp cos I had no experience with brackish water. But after a little bit I got the hang of it and I love having them.
OK today he took a turn for the worse. He had been fine, happily swimming around and eating from my hand, but today he was really lethargic, spending time just sitting motionless at the bottom of the tank. Sometimes he even tilted downwards.
I yanked him and put him in the 10g that I had started to set up. All it has is a sponge filter, though. It is currently at 1tbsp salt per gallon and he's the only fish in there. When I put him there he perked up a bit and started exploring and swimming around but he's back to being sluggish.
I hope I'm doing the right thing here. The tank I pulled him from was about 88 degrees and had a tsp salt per gallon and this one is about 82. I figure that temperature transition shouldn't be a huge problem for him. I just hope that we didn't kill him by leaving him in the other tank for that long. I figured it would be better, since he was in pure freshwater at the store.
This makes me sad. I've had all sorts of problems for the past week with this tank. I'm finding that my crisis management isn't quite as good as I thought it was.
And now he's laying on his side, basically a goner This is awful, I feel so terrible for him, and like it's all my fault. I have tried to do everything I could to correct the LFS/my/my girlfriend's mistakes and he just went from happy to miserable just like that. I wish I knew why. Obviously I'm not going to get another one but I hate that I subjected him to this.
When his tank light went out on the time I shined a flashlight in and from a certain angle he had what looked like ich flakes. But they were very evenly spaced and uniform all over him. And I couldn't see them when I turned the light back on. Is that normal? I am battling ich in the tank he was in... but I swear I've got the upper hand in that battle. Otherwise the tetras and barbs would be dropping like flies.
This sucks. He was such a great fish. My girlfriend is bawling about this.
You need sea salt...Not freshwater aquarium salt...The latter causes a Brine environment. Sea-salt has the necessary minerals and all that jazz.....I'm not 100% about it though as it is brackish. I am just trying to help you and your girl. I feel terrible. If he/she does pass tonight, get the right stuff buy a few and do it right this time. We all have this happen. Even if you research for decades on end, still there are things that are missed. Just take it easy tonight. If he dies relax, give each other a hug and freeze him, or put him in a receptacle. Good luck.
