i got out for a little while mainly bc i was in iraq and all over and had no time to take care of them, but not long after i had free time i started one small tank and next thing i new i had like 10 tanks runing and wife alrdy saying i spent all the money lol. i think its normal to lose intrest from time to time, but if you truely love the hobby u will keep coming back.

johnptc, she died in his tank though. causes unknown. others are fine as far as i know. Though he wont show me pics
only pics ive seen are of my tinfoil, which is getting huge i might add.
I've been in and out of the hobby several times. Most of the "out" time was due to moving to apartments and just general "growing up" where there was no time for fish.
Then comes marriage, the last apartment, a small tank for the kids. Then came the house, a big tank and, eventually, an even bigger tank.
Now costs across the board are going through the roof.
Right now I can see clear to keep my tank(s) going for a while. I'm even finishing a new plywood tank. But if the economy continues to gets worse and energy costs keep going up I'd hate to have shut down operations just because of affordability. I've noticed in the DIY section here that the number of big projects has dropped significantly.
I just dont want to go back to the ten gallon tank with a guppy in it.

I've never left and never will. Have been keeping fish for 23 years now and am probably more interested than ever. BUT I've seen many people start the hobby and spend literally thousands on it-18 months later if that they've jacked. They just lost all interest-when they come to my house they don't even bother to look at or mention the fish at all. But when you look at these people they tend to go through fazes with their hobbies-each year its something different so to speak.
I can relate both on the money issue/life issues. Through our difference in opinion. It would be sad to see you get out all together. But I've been there and sometimes you gotta do what's best for the mind/body/soul.
i only have a 180 and 90 gallon right now. so, i dont feel overwhelmed or frusterated. im looking to buy another 180 for SA/CA cichlids--then that will be it for me. i enjoy fishkeeping, and even dont mind cleaning the tanks (though my hubby dreads it). the only time i get upset is if an older fish gets sick or dies-it makes me wonder if im good at this or not. I just had an old yellow lab (african) die on me a month ago- i really loved her ,and she fought hard to live but was just too far gone. i felt really bad.
