Does a standard glass aquarium (40 gallon breeder in this case) need to be supported around the whole bottom edge, or will it work fine if one of the short edges is unsupported (4 corners and 3 edges)

Considering that the 265g at my LFS is (and always has been) only supported by the corners, I think that would be fine.

I'm using a stand for a 72x18 tank, so one short end is supported under the corners only. I could probably add a cross brace to the stand pretty easily though.

I would put a 2x8 as a support with stryrofoam. Glass sags, thats 400+ pounds of pressure pushing down. and configure the blocks upright
since those 3 segments wont be as strong as using it upright with all
the support on all sides...Always think about the pressure pushing down
when it comes to stands. that's if you plan on using your LFS' setup.

Make sure all the weight is distributed on your tank. you never know one
side might give out. I have been using styrofoam for all of my tanks ever
since from the start back in the days...

Ill post a photo of my setup tomorrow...

I think just the corners is fine...but Im no expert.

Did you get the 40 yet? If not...I think all Petcos are having a tank sale..1$ per gallon...I just got 2 40's and 2 20's today for about 140something out the door.
