Oh yes, these are not cheep projects. We may be able to get some stuff for free if we do it during our Ag class and tell him its a project. That way the school buys all of our wood and possibly a few other things, that is one thing that is keeping the flame going under this soon to be project.
Better start fund-raising or working on donations. Your looking at a few thousand for glass. Add in filtration and accessories.
Some businesses will make donations for projects but you'll have to write up donation requests letters and such.

im the other guy in this project, the tank will be about 8x4x3 plywood build, with a 7x2 sheet of glass, i am beginning to compromise with 1/2", i have it planned out, i am in planning process of finding the supplies, at my dads shop i may be able to barrow a forklift, to load this build up and transport.

Keep in mind though then calculating glass thickness you need to do the math for the depth of water not just the viewing window height.
Example. If you put in a 3" tall viewing window the calculations would say something like 1/16" glass would be thick enough. But if this 3" tall window was at the bottom of 3-4 feet of water it would break from the water pressure on it.
yea, the volume and pressure is my biggest worry right now, but a happy medium between 1/2" and 1" isn't a good enough reason to say of 3/4" or something, i have to do a little research and math, but no thinner then 1/2" and no thicker then 1" to keep cost, and weight down. to me if i had to say right now on an order sheet im thinking 3/4" 7/8" but again that is just me trying to figure how thick in comparison to the 4' depth with 7'x2' dimensions. lots of pressure.
As mentioned your determining factor is the water depth. 4 feet is gonna require 1" for a safety factor of 2.5 which is considered the norm.
Hi there, sounds a good project you got, how big is the viewing window to going be, if its just 3 foot high then 18mm (3/4) will do i think, i say this as i am going to build a 12long x 4high x 6deep tank but the window will be just 3 foot high and atleast 6 inch from the bottom, if you make it 12 inch it would have a even higher SF.
Again i say this as from what i have researched.
