glass overhang style tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have seen a few of these Fluval edge tanks in the flesh and the glass is roughly 10mm on the bottom and all sides
(I didn't have a tape measure on hand but I am pretty good at estimating size.) So yes they are completely overbuilt for their capacity but I cannot comment on whether or not they use toughened glass.
Toughened glass scares me from the point of having them shatter into many tiny pieces wthout warning.
At this point I am thinking that the best thing to do visually as well as structually would be to have starfire glass for the 3 front sides in 10mm(0.4inch) for clarity and so the side profile of glass is clearer than regular green. The bottom pane of glass also starfire only 5mm(0.2inch) but resting on a 5mm(0.2 inch) steel plate. I really cannot see the steel deflecting significantly over the 50mm(1.96inch) overhang.

Don't count on it, there are people out there who calculate the flexibility and deflection of steel for a living [engineers], it wouldn't be too hard to figure it out for certain rather than just guessing and hoping.

I'm not even sure they make 5mm glass (6mm is a common size though), but I'd be inclined to go for 10mm for the base as well as the sides.

Having slept on it I am inclined to agree. After talking to a few aquarium builders today to get a quote they all recommended 12mm glass all round. The thing is 12mm glass is sooo much more expensive than 10mm.
