AIR is correct. They make a tool to score the glass and after scoring it you set the glass that you have scored along a straight edge like a table top and then snap the part that you scored. It will make a clean crisp edge. But i dont know how to make it so the edges are smooth so you dont get cut. Its basically just like cutting ceramic tiles. Score it and snap it.... PRESTO
To smooth the edges you can use a dremel, sandpaper, or even a belt sander becareful with the later

That's a common tank size and almost every LFS I've ever been in has glass top kits for them. They come with handles...the sides are smooth...they come with hinges and they also come with the plastic strips for the back. (filter cut out strip)

IMO your way better off just buying one. Sure making your own is cheaper...(at least until you mark a cut wrong or crack a piece and have to start over...or require stiches.) but you'll still have to find the hinge material and polish the edges...Attach a handle...

Common tank size for sure. For a standard tank with top bracing, I would just buy them. They are not that expensive online. My problem is that I have a couple of older 125 gal. tanks made of 1/2" glass. Since these tanks have thicker glass than the newer tanks, they have no need for the center braces. This means the normal tops won't fit, because the braces give something for the tops to rest on. The tanks that I have were once used for reef tanks, so I didn't get any tops with them when they were given to me. I didn't think a 6foot piece of glass was a good idea resting on top of the tanks, so I made tops for both tanks out of 1/4" acrylic. The seemed strong enough, fit perfect, and looked great for a while, but now they are warping like crazy. I guess it's back to the drawing board. I would love to hear any ideas that anyone has. :)

Sure...have a piece of glass cut and put IN a center euro brace. It dosn't take very long. I usually prefur thicker glass when ever possible.

I realize the tank dosn't NEED a brace so 3/8 would be fine. but it would certianly help out the top situation. Almost all of our tanks have hoods and only a couple of them have glass tops. For the most part I use Eggcrate.

Air you said you bought this tool at Home Depot? Its just like a pen looking blade that scores glass right?

It looks like a pen, here look at this picture:

Score it, snap it, sand it. Hinges can be found online as well as handles. I made my entire sump using Home Depot glass and a glass cutter.

Also if you know your dimensions and dont want to really mess with the cutting it yourself I know that Lowes cuts glass and plexi for you...granted I wouldnt use plexi as previously mentioned it bows :)

Actually glass does bend. It bends elastically but not plastically. When it reaches its elastic limit, it will break.

Here is a link with step by step instructions on cutting glass for lids. (And how to make handles).

And that magic pencil thing is called a grease pencil.
