Glass vs Acrylic just depends on a few things.

ACRYLIC:
-Stronger than Glass
-Can come in any shape
-Lighter than Glass
-More expensive than Glass
-Scratches easier than Glass
-Not as clear as Glass

GLASS:
-Cheaper
-Clearer
-Easier to clean algae off of
-Can be easily damaged
-Heavier
-More pieces to assemble into shapes

I have glass, but would like acrylic. It's just not in my price range.

Glass is not clearer than Acrylic.

acrylic is clearer and it hold the temp more stable (less loss of heat). if you have a 180 gal built from 1/2 inch sheet it will not bow, if 3/8 then it will bow a little bit (some MAJOR manufacturer build some from 3/8 inch be careful) anything 24 inches and above must be 1/2 inch beyond 24 inches thicker. if you have the money or you really want to be sure of sturdyness i will go for acrylic... if you really want acrylic then go for it. :D or else you will keep on thinking why you took the glass tank. :(

Here's a tip, glass tanks rarely last longer than 10 years. Acrylic tanks last forever(almost) It's impossible for the seams to leak and the microscopic cracks that cause glass tanks to crack don't happen with acrylic.

Downside being how easily it scratches. That and too much buffing isn't good cos you're essentially removing the scratched area(making the acrylic thinner)

Advantage glass.. cheaper
advantage acrylic... last forever

How do acrylic tanks with overflow work? I am looking for a 100 or so gal, and am weighing my options. Do you use a canister?

it works like a siphon... the tank would either have a built in sump, drilled back with bulkhead or an overflow box... either way the concept would have the water flow down the wet/dry and through the mechanical filter, drip to the bioball and the sump accumulates the water.... in the sump you can put heater in it... for me this is better to avoid accidental burns and the tank looks free from clutters... the sump will have another sponge filter going to the pump which can also have an optional sponge filter... basically it tries to get as much dirt out.. before it pumps back to the aquarium with either a spray bar or nozzle. in my own opinion..its a better choice. not that i don't like canister it is just easier to change filter media. got a canister and having hard time to clean it,but as i said it's your choice and canister needs to be cleaned every month. :)
