Glo Fish Problems!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry I assumed glo fish were dyed same way as parrots. But I remember now that it is a gene from jelly fish under deep in the ocean that use this to see in the blackness.

I don't believe they will be glo fish though. I though I read this before.

I heard you can't sell them. I knew they were genetically enhanced but I've never heard of anyone breeding them.

I just recently found that out myself. I had always assumed they were injected and refused to have anything to do with them (like the flourescent fish 10+ years ago) and then found out they were genetically modified and not harmed. Made me feel better about them, but they still don't really trip my trigger...

I looked it up and only state where you cant even own them is California. You also cannot own them in Canada. They are illegal to sell in all states!

They fall under the GMO label iir... not my cup of tea either. as for breading i've heard of limited success and a high rate of infertility.

Glofish are not dyed. They've been genetically altered by the incorporation of fluorescent jellyfish genetic material into their chromosomes. From what I've read, they're supposed to have been developed sterile to prevent competition with the Texas lab that developed them. If the spawn proves to be viable the fry should follow the genetic makeup of the parents and be glo-fish, too.

Don't doubt it too quickly. California pushed through their ban on glo-fish faster than with any other species. This is due to the glo-fish falling under an existing CA state law which bans all genetically altered fish species in the state. If stores are selling these fish in CA, they're doing so illegally.
