Nice buy. but i hear it's 1 fx5 per 55 gallons. :nilly:

:screwy:

dont just go by reviews on some site, but hear the stories on MFK! all filters have thier own advantages/disadvantages for a setup. 2 FX5's will be the best way to go. the only eheim would be a 2262, and even the FX5 has it beat in media flow, just not capacity. you could use the unbelievable eheim 2217's, but, you would need quite a few, so you might as well use the money for the fluvals. i have both a 2217 and an FX5 on my 125.. FX5 all the way

Wait a minute, so you are telling me this is not true....

The Fluval FX5 is a large capacity, multi-stage external canister filter system. Fluval FX5's massive capacity and powerful integrated motor processes and recirculates 607 U.S. gallons (2,300 liters) of water every hour, enabling precise management of water conditions for aquariums as large as 400 U.S. gallons (1,500 liters).

thats kinda what i was thinking.....i know you should never really use up to the 400 limit or any filter.....i always thought it was 60% is the most you should use out of the max of a filter

I got fx5 and 2262, for my 260 gallon tank, I was thinking sold the fx5 and get another 2262.

Its a marketing strategy by fluval. Take a look at most filters in the market. Most of them are over-rated so that more people would buy. NEVER look at the aquarium capability but the turnover rate.

The 607 U.S gph is done under optimum condition, that means no Media in the FX5 and no head loss. Under normal working conditions, it pumps at only about 525gph.

I would recommand a turnover rate of between 4~10x an hour for a normal stocked tank. Personally I would try to get as close to 10x as possible. But lets face it, not many people would like to splurge $ on fishes. So I'll say about 4x.

The FX5 turn at 525gph, so
525/4 = 131g tank.

So that is 1 FX5 per 131g. You could add more FX5, it really is a choice. There isn't such thing as overfiltration.

For me, if I have a 200g, ill go with aclockworkorange's suggustion and get 2 FX5

Nah thats just my personal preferance. I always aim for 10x. :)

PS : Sorry double posted. Can some mod delete the post 17? tyvm

from seeing everyones posts in other forums, the FX5s' are best for mechanical and the Eheims' are best for bio, true?
anyways, its better to overfilter than underfilter
