Now i have been back and forth with making my own 3D BackGround and glueing some slate rocks and making them like a 3D backGround. Has anyone glued rocks together to make a whole setup if so can you share your experience or any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated i want to figure out which route would be better and safer for the fish !!

i have never done it but i dont think gluing rocks together will hold very well since they are heavy and the debrie from the rocks would be grabbed from the glue and if your using rock as the whole background that will be alot of weight but then again depends on how you want to build it (need more info) i have seen people use roof gutter with holes and glued small rocks onto that

Now what is I wanted to take slate a small but slightly heavy piece an glue/silicone the PVC to the slate and then styrofoam to the top of the PVC do you think that could work ??

Hello; I salvaged pieces of slate from a broken blackboard a few decades ago. I have used silicone to bond the slate to glass and to itself. Some pieces have stayed stuck to date while others have come apart after a time. Clean and very dry surfaces seem to be a plus. Patience in required to allow plenty of time for the silicone to cure. It can take several sessions to build up layers.
Some of the slate siliconed to glass has stuck so well that I fear the glass may break before the bond parts.
As slates can be very different in composition my experience with the type used for blackboards may be an exception. Slate that does not have a clean hard surface may not work so well. If it has a powder like surface or is easy to break it may come apart as mentioned by others. My first wild ... guess (WAG) is that the slate sold as floor tiles and such would likely be suitable.

In my experience silicon doesn't attach to pvc it comes off when pulled draw what you want to do and maybe we can help give u other ways to do it

I used ge 1 silicone to "glue" and entire slate background to my 125g set up, worked great but it was heavy as hell, lasted for over a year before I tore it down to make room for a bigger tank. Had to use some muscle to pull the rocks back off the glass and some of the larger pieces still didnt budge. It worked great for my application, hope this helps.

No I didnt tank any pics, sorry. I first siliconed the larger pieces of rock to the glass tank, and kind of like a puzzle filled in the gaps with the smaller pieces of rock until I had filled up the entire back wall of the 125. I also glued some pieces together making walls and caves and such. I puts down some egg crate on the bottom of the tank and just started siliconing pieces in. I got the idea from Frank Meuller's 240 gallon frontosa mixed tank. Google it and it should give you some good ideas.

You could potentially just use some two part epoxy if you have any. You'd be able to blend colors if you're glueing rocks together, it might make it slightly more aesthetically pleasing.
