:irked:God I hate crappy petshops. My neighbours fish all died except his gourami...he wanted some more so went to the fish shop...told 'em all his fish have died and he wants some more...no questions as to why they died, they just asked him how big the gourami was and then sold him two unidentified african cichlids...One yellow and one dark with blue strips....for a bioorb...they are already too big, and when they came how the dark one had nearly killed the yellow one already, when they put it in the biorb it kicked the crap out the gourami. He knocks my door wondering why the 3" Gourami is getting killed by the 3" new fish cause the shop said agression is purely on size!

Oh, did I mention our water has a GH of 0 a KH of 0 and a ph of 6...thats what the shop had them in and they never even mentioned them liking hard water... I dont know much about them but I now have the aggressive one in a bucket upstairs, I have chucked my goldfish in my neighbours pond so have my 2fter as a temp home, but it looks like I'm gonna be doing a African Tank.

What makes it even worse is I was in this particular shop a month ago and saw africans in their crappy tank and pointed out the need 'special' water, and they just shrugged...:irked:

I just wish hed asked me first! I just given him a short course on water management and some fish a bit more suitable for a biorb... Left him with some test strips, thinking...this isnt my job, I mean, I dont mind, I like my neighbour, but its not me that made £10 off him today!

Now I'm gonna have to get reading and try and lean something about africans, cause I know nothing...

at least they will now have a life with someone who actually cares enough to research about them.

Shhhh, my wife might hear...THEY WERE SUFFERING...look at his poor little face, he's going to DIE...unless of course you let me buy another tank, my dear...oh, and he's gonna need some likle ickle friends...:D

Yeah but it does pose the problem of what they are, and I dont know about Rift valley water, so gonna have to learn...all I know is its hard! Heres a couple of crap pics from when they were in the Orb.

As I had no luck instore I'm gonna make a complaint to the head office tomorrow, and if I get no joy I have a nasty little idea that may cause them a major headache, that is if rift valley water is as esencial to their health as I have been led to believe!!!!

Are you sure your GH and KH levels are at 0? That is very odd for any body of water.

They are not zero, but are so low that the test kits dont work...on mine your suppose to wait till it goes yellow then add the next chemical...here it just stays purple!

The river rises 10 miles behind our house and flows over almost nothing but peat and granite before it gets here and the reservoir is about 8 miles upstream! High DOC and acidic, but thats about all. The river is very clean but hardly anything can live in it, even signal crays are struggling! They were introduced to the river about 20 yrs ago and have managed to colonise a grand total of 1 mile! That mile is the one part of the river where there is a small limestone outcrop and that sits after the reservoir. We also have an exceptionally high rainfall which further dilutes the Ca...just up the coast from here is one of the wettest places on earth getting over 3 meters per annum. We dont get that much but we get a lot! We are one of the few places that actually need to harden our water for amazon's.

Wish I could help with specifics. all I know is that they prefer hard water and slightly alkaline pH. and sand substrate. They make certain types of sand that helps keep your water inside the correct hardness/pH. I believe crushed coral is one, and I know there is a sand of black and white granules made specifically for African Cichlid aquariums.

Good luck and post some pics when you get the 150 gallon tank up and running!!
