Told my GF I'm done. At least for a while. She gave me a look of disbelief like, "I've heard that before". I have multiple tanks that weren't all fully stocked and have been spending way too much time and money of fish lately. Told myself I wasn't going to buy anymore fish for a while but forgot that I ordered some Geophagus Tapajos from fish store that I promised to pick up this Friday. I even went and picked up a couple fish tanks that dude had responded back to me from craigslist reply. Two 20L gallons for $10.

How do I find self control? I'm not pressed for money but I know I don't need to be spending hundreds of $ every month on fish and not eating them.

Anybody can relate. Its like you tell yourself you don't need any more and then you watch your tank and say, "hey you know what would make this tank look better".

Done buying or getting rid of the fish?
You have to stop buying at some point, when you run out of room.Take some time to enjoy what you have.;)

You know I honestly think this can be kind of a serious problem. At first I was joking with my family about my fish/tank buying obsession, but after a while you understand that it is really getting out of hand. I honestly think that it boils down to greed. Even though I like all the different kinds of fish and would like our house to be an aquarium, it still boils down to a bit of greed. Giving is the best way to over come greed IMO. Donate a tank with some cool fish to a poorer school or special needs school, that would help you over come the craze. GL..

Wow, that's some really deep stuff.

Deepsouth, I can kinda agree with you. Though I have plans and want to get into breeding fish and experiencing all kinds, it is a greed issue with having more than everyone else. On a mellow note, I have set up tanks for people and given fish away for free.

I actually want to get into the business of selling fish with heavy emphasis on conservation. Thing is, sometimes I feel thats been my excuse for buying more fish and setting up more tanks. I can be too impulsive sometimes and go over board. I realized I had a problem when I took my neice to petstore because she was into wildlife like I am and I wanted to show her this big petstore in Va Beach. When I got to store, I almost forgot about her while buying fish for me. Talking to others I see I'm not that alone. Nothing wrong with buying fish, but I've seen people with several tanks in their living and bed rooms. At what point do you say, I have an obsession and how do you fix it?

Stop wasting money on little sissy tanks. Get a 300 and sell the rest.

Sel control is a hard thing to learn. You just have to stop yourself from buying. Or, just find another project to work on as well.

Find a way to get the experiences without buying anything. Can you help friends with their tanks? Maybe find a kid through a mentoring program who wants to learn about fishkeeping? Etc.

So your saying thats its more about fish then the money, because there is a difference of putting a lot into your hobby and getting into debt because of your hobby, but since your saying money isnt that big of an issue then maybe you can get into another hobby, it doesnt even have to cost that much, maybe something like disc golf/golf. My other hobby is cars and sadly its pretty expensive but i try and balance myself out. Maybe you could find something that both you and your GF like doing.
