It all started with adding almond leaves to my Rhom tank. I love the was it looks and the fish seems happier as well. I have since converted my HRP tank to blackwater as well. Time to do it with my 180 which is primarily Cichla and Oscars. Here is the tank before adding leaves

Do any of your fish have HITH?
We have a big discussion regaurding this issue....almond leaves may benefit our bw fish more than we thought.
Ohhh...ditch that ugly decor for some driftwood :)

Lol I would agree with the driftwood idea. It will also help with the blackwater idea and it looks good at the same time. Can't wait to see the progression.

I saw the convo about HITH, none of my fish have it, but I figure if I could possibly prevent it...
And yes, my 180 SERIOUSLY needs re-aquascaped. It's next on my to do list.

I was thinking about doing this too my 155 cichla tank. Keep us updated with the progress, i am curious to see how it turns out!

I added (20) grade C leaves in a nylon stocking to an AC110 running just the sponge. I'll post pics every 24 hours until the color stabilizes to see how dark the 20 leaves stains the water. I plan on adding Mopani wood when I re-scape the tank in the next few months. The tannins from the wood should help a bunch with the color.

im actually thinking about getting some almond leaves for my L183 plecos. Im interested in seeing how this works.

I have a thread in the Piranha Media section titled 'Blackwater Rhom Tank' that has a 72 hour almond leaf progression, if you wanted to see what I have going on there.
