Going for a natural look

another way to go is to use many smaller branches from the top down,some with angles,along the back of the tank.for background i like to paint the outside of the tank flat black.collect some round river stones,mixed sizes up to softball size or bigger if you want
 
i was just in that store today,call them see if he has them in the store for you to look at.your in NYC? the store is on Washington ave. in Belleville...seems pricey,but they look great,i think i have seen pics online of them in use

I'll have to call, I live on the east end of long island so trucking it out to the city isn't really something I'd like to do haha
 
But keep the ideas coming, I'm not sure about the 3d background yet because I'd like as much space for my Oscar as possible... And it also depends on how much I get back from my taxes :naughty:

Though I really like the look... Anyone have visual examples of what they're talking about? Show those natural tanks... Here's a setup I like...

i bought some cork bark, screwed them into some slate (covered by substrate) and left them free standing..... the submerged tree look is great and easy to do, it also leaves a lot of space for swimming.
 
Here's my 135gal CA tank...

I feel like you are pretty limited with your aquascaping due to your choice of stock, an Oscar. A 75gal is pretty much the bare minimum for a single adult Oscar so it's going to need the majority of the tank open for swimming space, not to mention they have the tendency to re-decorate themselves anyway.

This is true CJ, I've actually followed your threads on cichlid-forum for a while now (chubbs the jellybean), and love your 135! I'm kind of thinking about just getting a few larger rocks (boulders perhaps) and putting them on the left hand side corner of my tank and having the wood in the middle where it is now. Trying to invision it
 
I have found the more pieces of driftwood and rocks you have to work with and choose from, the easier it is to create a good looking aquascape. I would definitely recommend picking up more driftwood as your very limited with only a single piece. I would start walking creek and river banks and just making a stockpile...

I really like the look of driftwood entering the water from the surface, instead of just having a bunch of pieces resting on the bottom. Here's a perfect example of what I would like to re-create once I collect enough interesting pieces: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVknMkdD2bI&feature=related

Wow nice, yeah I have more than one piece. I have about 6 other pieces (4 of which are in the 55 right now) of smaller driftwood, but again they're smaller. Here's what I've got...

Sadly I live by no rivers (live on long island) but I do live by the ocean... Are pieces of DW from the ocean safe to use?
