That something I been thinking about. My 100g tank was thinking of growing it full of live plants. This seems it would do the same thing for a freshwater tank as it does for a salt.

So you saltwater elitist finally getting off your high horse?

no need to go down this road, not depating which is better. im sheerly looking for HELP and INFORMATION... im not looking to debate anyone nor dis either side. ive just had more issues than id like with salt and am thinking maybe fresh is better for me. thank you giants for you help so far. anyone else have any input as well? anything i should know?

same way i did with the salt than, what would i use since there is no live rock for fresh

alot of people use different things.. I personally like to use "crud" from another tank and sprinkle abit of flake food in every day until the cycle is complete. Some will toss a piece of shrimp, ect. Essentially you want something to start decomposeing, and bacteria to start growing. The adding of crud from a cycled system is like adding a "bacteria starter" which some are more reliable then others.. but aquarium crud is free! You can also jump start a system with bio-media thats been pre-seeded in another FW aquarium, or ask your local LFS for a used peice of their filter floss ect.

These will all give you the same results in varying times ect.

And yes you can use a Algae scrubber set-up on a FW system. I keep live plants in most my systems with the same concept. depending how yours is designed switch out SW macro's for FW. I've even seen a few that the owner has intigrated houseplants to utilize the nitrates and grow them. or as simple as algae grown on river rocks in a stream-type set-up.

Another big difference is FW you will be wanting to do 25% WC weekly if not more depending on your stock. Most SW enthusiests I know do the whole Jaw drop... So invest in a good Syphon, at that size def look into the Python type, many brands available and they can be "home-made" as well. You may also look into a drip system ect..

i already have a good syphon from a 600 gallon discus tank i bought and have an rodi hooked up to an ato which i was hoping to transfer over. as for stock i really don't know what id but it. im partial to asthetically pleasing fish, any suggestions?

All has been said, already ( I also did it once )..

You can ad whatever you like to the sump. I have cannister, fluidized snd bed and other nitrate removal gadgets working from the sump and into the sump.

I have a wet dry and 2 refugiums with plants. It all works in connection with the sump, so you only get to see the tank.

overall how hard is fresh to keep compared to salt?
