I agree with the sunfish statement, any fish in the sunfish family is pretty hardy, they seem to survive anything from near freezing to tropical. Not prone to getting either. It wouldn't surprise me if you dropped him in without acclimation (not recommended) and he ended up being the king of the tank in 2 weeks. Sounds like a fun trip.
