going on a vacation, what about the fish!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i went vacation for 3 weeks and i told my sister to only feed 1/3 of the amount of fish food to my monsters and other fishes.. i list the dates (every 4-5 days intervals) on when to feed and every 2 days follow feeding i would list to my dad to change water.. use painters tape to draw a line on how much needs to be changed.. i learn from people is that fish can go without eating for a week or 2..keep everything listed clearly and make things as SIMPLE as Possible for that person.. large monster can go without food for 1-2months straight... so you're fine.. just enjoy your trip...

I'm stressing about the same thing right now. I have a friend who's into fish, so he usually offers to feed them for me, provided I prepare the food. I've gone on several short to medium length vacations (never more than a week though) and I have yet to lose a fish. I pick the fish sitters carefully. They know how much I care about my pets, so they do their best to treat them the way I do.

My basic plan of attack is:
1. 25-50% water change for everyone the day before I leave
2. Clean one filter on each tank (most have 2)
3. prep zip lock bags for each tank with a feeding schedule of every other day
4. Invite my fish-sitter over so he can watch HOW I feed my fish
- hand feed the e-cat
- one piece at a time for the ATF tank. Let him chew and swallow before the next piece is thrown in.
- let the Clwon Knife grab the first piece in the 180, but make sure you throw a piece or two to the Odoe because he's shy. The Gar will either grab his share or pick up what falls on the bottom. The wolf takes care of himself
- spread food on both sides of the 120, try to drop some in front of the fire eel because he will not leave his hidey place
5. pray

Good luck with the fish, and have fun on the vacation!

Where are you headed? We've got the whole immediate family + spouses/fiances booked at an all inclusive place in Cancun. It's gonna be fun on the bun!

What I do when I go on vacation is put the amount of food that I want in those little pill dispenser, the ones with monday thru Sunday, then I ask my uncle to just dispense one each day to each tank, that way its controlled the amount of food.

I do the same thing with the pill containers. I put in about 1/3 of what I normally feed daily because the person watching them does not do any water changes, just feeds them. Ive went on 2 week vacations for years now with only one issue. The last time I had a runt silver dollar die and everyone ate him. Only found a bit of gill plate. So that is one disadvantage to keeping them a bit on the hungry side.
