Going out of town?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've left my polys for 3 weeks without issue. I usually prepack food for every few days, then whoever is looking after the house can't overfeed :)
You’ve got some leeway with a planted tank.

Will your sen eat pellets? If not get him on pellets of some sort. I put pellets in my auto feeder and no issues. But everyone in my tank eats pellets and or flake. Just one more reason to have your polys eating pellets, besides health benefits of whole foods.

In a pond? Whoah haha. Everything went okay in there?
Everything went well. That was last summer. The trickiest part, was getting it out of the pen. I had to use a kayak and and a rubber fish net.

Thanks, everyone! I may start getting my guys used to pellets. We don't leave for a couple weeks, so I've got some time.

Thank you!
Your fish will love you :)

Yikes haha, going fishing with some lettuce :p

Sen will eat any sinking pellet, idk if a carnivore sinking pellet will work in a automatic feeder.
Depends on the feeder. I've got the marineland one it works with most foods and most sizes. I've had it clog before it comes with an air line fitting but that doesn't work well. Maybe if it had its own little air pump off a valve it still uses to much air, no resistance.

The problem with autofeeder, is that they can fail. Especially when they are placed inside a humid hood. In the past, I've tried different brands of feeders including Eheim, and there always seems to be some sort of issues that occurred. So, I've written off autofeeders. They can fail and over feed, and cause derimental water quality issues.
From experience, you'll figure out that 2 weeks fasting is nothing. I've had fish that would just stop eating for months, for whatever reason. Fish can live off body fat/tissues for quite some time. 2 weeks is really nothing except for very, very young fish.

I left mine last year for 2 weeks with an Eheim autofeeder . When I came back everyone behaved as if I had never left....The feeder worked fine and I left it on for a few more weeks after I came back out of laziness...it was so handy....I have all my lights on timers. I've got plants so lights were on as normal during my time out.

My only worry was the amount of evaporation because my tanks are open top, plus the amount of food the feeder would drop, so I did test a couple of months prior and put the feeder on, stopped the water changes and didn't touch the tank, only observed. It worked out just fine so I did not worry about it during my holiday.

This year it will be 3 weeks so we'll see....I am going to do a 3 week test again....

My advise is test prior to that and see how the fish behave, feeders, etc...
Also, do not do a water change just the day before you leave in case you forget to plug something back on....Make sure everything is working as intended so give yourself a couple of days...If the tank is set up correctly(good filtration and no overstocking) and had been water changed regularly, the fish will be just fine.

I just do a wc before I leave and let them fast for the time I'm away.

Last year, however, I did played it safe, and made a special arrangement for my 20" giant gourami. Fearing he could get Ill tempered from hunger and cause damage, I built him a pen and placed him in the small pond on my property. I had a friend come over a few times and throw in some heads of romaine lettuce. All the other fish in the house just fasted.View attachment 1315726 View attachment 1315727
I absolutely love this idea with the pin. Im glad it all worked out having him in there. There are a lot of birds in my area, so I wouldn’t be able to do that. However, that fish does look really big.

What type of giant gourami is this? Does he have a name?
