Going peaceful... what do you guys think?

Kribensis are adaptable to a wide range of conditions. You can keep them in soft or hard water. Actually, I think pH will alter the ratio of males and females in a spawn. They may not be the best litmus test for South American apistos.

IMO, a lot of South American cichlids do fine as long as you keep their water really clean and you feed them well. There are exceptions to that, but overall I do not alter my water and I've had great luck with all sorts of SA fish. Spawning may or may not happen if the fish don't like your parameters, but that's something you could adjust later if you wanted to try your hand at that. Why not set up a smaller tank and start with a trio just to see how they fare?

Maybe it's just me, but a female apisto sounds like the perfect food for a knife....

...I used to keep a pair of double-red cacatuoides. I found them to be very forgiving with water conditions. I put them in a 10g with 5 cardinal tetras and they lived for years with only about 4 water changes a year. That's not my normal practice with fish, but this was a tank I set up for my mom and it only got cleaned when I returned home, which was less often than expected due to my thesis.

Although I hear cacatuoides are the most forgiving of the bunch. Agassizi are supposed to be fairly hardy as well.

yeah i was thinking about that too, the zebra knife doesnt really get that big though so i think as long as i kept it well fed it wouldnt be an issue and probably now im just going to do all males so not sure if ill have any tiny females to worry about anyways, but the zebra knife is only going to happen if i order from the vendor here near me, if i order from somebody else than i most likely wont get it unless they have them as well for the same price

and i havent really looked into keyholes that much but aren't they pretty bland looking, like dont they not have much color...

How much are you getting the knife for? I'm just curious about the markup.

Keyholes definitely have an understated appearance. They're charming, peaceful little fish but they are not going to wow anyone with their colors most of the time. Like certain acaras, their appeal is probably more about personality than presence. Just my 0.02. I have kept them often and love them, but if you're looking for color, stick with Apistos or rams.

Well, I meant keyholes as part of the community, not necessarily instead of the apistos. Have you looked at the other dwarf SA species like laetacara and dicrossus?

@pomatomus, the knives he has he is selling for 15 and are F0 (though I am assuming pretty much all are F0 since these dont breed in captivity do they?)

and yeah im definitely looking to have the nice contrasting splash of color at the bottom since the understated color beauty will be at the top with the angels, @aclockworkorange i hadnt looked into those but i do definitely like both groups, especially the dicrossus, i dont really know anything about what all dwarf spp there are so suggestions to give me a starting research point are definitely always welcome :)

That is a great deal on the knives! Very close to the wholesale prices I've seen. Sounds like you picked a good vendor!

My favorite dwarf SA:

That is the only species that could get me back into dwarf SAs.
