Going to breed convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Check to see if the male has a tube down too. She may be ready but he may not be, but I doubt it. Just look around for eggs and any behavior that looks like they are guarding something. Do you have any slate rock or turned over pot for them to use? They like to use that.

Ya I've got all sorts of slate and river rock and even a like a mayan ruin ornament with a large flat bottom. Is there any other behavior that is good to watch for? And how long after the egg tube is down do they typically lay the eggs?

Alright I was excited, but today the female is so fat that her sides/belly is kind of whiteish, almost like it's stretched. She's also not swimming around as much as normal. makes me kind of worried, any input?
Edit: one more thing: both convicts are exhibiting "flashing", rubbing against rocks, consistently.

just a couple things i seen thru the thread.

1. usually the rubbing of the rocks is todo with water quality. in my experience ammonia was high.

2. the male will not have a "tube" the female does this to drop the eggs

3. I keep convicts in every tank I have with other south americans as well as african cichlids. They provide these fish with a good source of protein, dont worry about taking the babies out of your tank just let them stay in there. every now and then you will get some to grow out but most times the other fish in the tank will eat them up. Which sounds like that is what you want another food source.

I have also put multipule females in the tank with the male and the male will produce with both females.
29g should be fine for two females and one male.
never a guarntee but heck for two bucks its worth it for the extra food

Theoretically they perfer soft but i too have rock water coming out of the faucet. I think my little cons have eggs they have been in the tank less than a week. I have had no trouble with pollys in the hard water, the important thing is keep the water clean and the values stable. thie are are exceptions to this rule but I don't see any in your tank list.

Please do not put a common pleco in the same tank as a polly They have a tendencey to latch on and injure the pollys. BTW I have never seen a chain with anything but sengals (dinosaur eels).

note about the polly Make shure your cover is tight and/or drop the water level an inch they are escape artists. adult gaint danios , med-lg beaunos areis tetras Or larger specimens of dimond shaped barbs like a tiger might make good dithers . Tigers can be nippy and anything much smaller will eventually be lunch for your polly.

This does include any convicts you may breed in that tank.

You called it man, the female I had in there got the dropsy and eventually died. New tank syndrome :( I caught it tho and all the other fish are fine, got a new female (better looking that the first) and two weeks later they already have fry swimming around. Thanks for everyone's help! I actually have everything in a 50 gallon now and started breeding guppies in the 29 for feeders.
