i am heading up to oregon to visit a buddy of mine from college during christmas. unfortunately he may have to work some of the days i am around, so i need to figure out a workable itinerary for some day trips in the surrounding areas as well as things to do in the city.
i will probably need to go exploring by myself on dec 27 (saturday) and maybe on sunday too. in any case, regardless of what day it is, i will probably have 8 to 10 hours each day to go site seeing by myself (i will have my own rental car).

i have the following ideas so far, but need some more.

- go to cannon beach and see the haystack rocks. i know it's gonna be freezing cold, but i want to go take a look anyways
- maybe go to tillamook on the same day i go to cannon beach? worth it?
- go to the saturday market and just walk around

and as far as places to eat, what do people recommend? i am up for eating at hole in the wall places, nice restaurants, mom and pop joints etc. as long as prices are not exorbitant and the food is good and a local favorite.

let me know. thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can drink in the strip clubs in Portland......They have food there too...Done......lol

I remember seeing some special about donuts on food network, Voodoo donuts look really good lol Look at some of the donuts they got;

Grape Ape
(raised doughnut with vanilla frosting and grape powder)
Dirt
(raised doughnut covered with vanilla glaze and oreo cookies)
Arnold Palmer
(cake doughnut covered with lemon and tea powder)
Butter Fingering
(Devils food, vanilla, and crushed Butterfinger)
Neapolitan
(chocolate doughnut with vanilla frosting and strawberry quick powder)
Triple Chocolate Penetration
(chocolate doughnut, chocolate glaze, and cocoa-puffs)
Voodoo Doughnut
(voodoo doll doughnut)
Dirty Snowball
(chocolate cake doughnut covered with pink marshmallow glaze and surprise filling)
Apple Fritter
(apple/glaze/doughnut as big as your head)
The Memphis Mafia
(chocolate chips/banana/ peanutbutter/glaze big!)
Portland Creme
(raised doughnut filled with creme and covered in chocolate with two eyes

Know anybody that works for nike? Nike employee store rocks for gear heh
Remember no sales tax in the state, also i believe you don't have to pump you own gas in the state.

Oh and yes i believe you can drink at the strip clubs in ore hehe

Your plans may depend on the weather. Right now portland is a mess - flights being cancelled, people chaining up yo drive on the freeway, et cetera. It is very possible that things will be thawed out by the 27th, so don't lose hope.

Tillamook is about an hour from Cannon Beach, you could definitely visit both in a day. The Tillamook Cheese Factory is a fun spot to visit.

If you like Lebanese food you should go to Nicholas' Restaurant, an incredible little hole-in-the-wall in Northeast Portland.

Powell's Books is the world's largest bookstore (actual store, Amazon has more inventory) and it is a great place to spend a few hours.

There are lots of great outdoor recreation possibilities, but the snow/ice may limit you. Bagby Hot Springs is a truly unique place - wooden hot tubs in the middle of some of the world's best old-growth forests.

I'll try to think of some more possibilities.

Have fun in Stump-town!

If i were you, i would drive down into Oregon, and a bit away from the City. The countryside is beautiful. I havent spent a lot of time near Portland itself, but i know that along the coast there are hundreds of great hiking trails, which is always enjoyable. I am actually heading up there soon, but will stay on the coast. There are tons of restaurants, but i cannot think of any to recommend off the top of my head

thanks for the tips.
the current weather conditions are unfortunate and hopefully it clears up in the next few days...

The forecast says it should warm up by Friday.

What kind of things do you like to do?

OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) is pretty cool, as is the Portland Zoo. Some of people have mentioned that you can drink in strip clubs (I didn't know you couldn't in other states). It all depends on where your interests lie. I'm more of an OMSI kind of guy...

There's also winter-sports activities, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, et cetera. With all this recent snowfall conditions should be good!

When I lived in Washington, I thought that had to be the most stupid thing about that state. :screwy:

Ewok, have a fun and safe trip.
