Gold Dorado and ATF dillemma ...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i'm going to keep my fingers crossed but today Dorado isnt really chasing anyone. Its almost like everyone has gotten used to his ways and just ignores him, thus taking away his fun of chasing. Only time will tell if he stays that way, but i love him.

its actually working out quite well .... the Dorado has really calmed down and now schools with the tigers tarpon and vampires. He gets in his moods, usually picks on the VATF the most, but the VATF gets in his moods and goes after everyone else, so its like Karma. The only thing the Dorado does is as soon as a fish grabs food he trys to steal it out of their mouth, which is kinda funny. I'll take pics, but i have to do a waterchange first, and since i'm very low on home heating oil, i've been putting it off .... so expensive in NY it sucks!!!!!!
do have some sort of bad news though. When i first started this tank over a year ago i didnt have enough current, and it was ok when the fish were small, but then the datnoids started flashing a lot, and their eyes would be a little cloudy, some worse than others. Then i added 2 circulators, 1 a magnum 5 and that fixed everything. So frustrating cause i spent hundreds on meds that didnt work, and all i had to do was add current. 1 NTT dat took it the worst, and even now 3 montha after his fins are still messed up, and he flashes and breaths heavier than the others. 3 of my 6 NTT's are always hiding and not growing, so a week ago i took out the driftwood they hide behind, and just put in a plant, in the hopes it would make them more outgoing i guess you could say, and free up more open water for the others. And it has worked for the most part, but the 1 NTT has taken a turn for the worst, and i think i may lose him, unfortunately. I also last week began buying smelt and market shrimp, rather than silversides and krill. The dats were a pain to get on krill, and now their being a pain to get on the shrimp, which isnt helping matters with the sickly NTT. i noticed a few white spots on his pectoral fins, and a larger white spot with a pink center on his tail. Very worried about him, cause he's starting to seem a little delerious. Not really sure what to do. Dont want you to think i havent changed the water in a long time, i did about 8 days ago, but i usually do 1 waterchange per week, so their due, however the shrimp is much less "dirty" than the krill, and my water parameters are fine so i dont think not doing a waterchange is why the dat is so messed up. I think taking away his hideout really messed him up, and in combination with the food change pushed him over the edge. I added salt and i'm hoping he gets better. Gonna pick up some krill too and see if he eats that, rather than continuing to starve them, but i doubt he'll eat. Probably will try some melafix tomorrow as well. Everyone else is doing well though, and as soon as the dats cave in and start eating the shrimp the tank will be back to bliss! Thanks for following up man, and sorry for the novel i just wrote too!

No no I enjoy the novel... good info. Try turning the heat up and possibly moving him to another tank "if possible" Just because it sounds like the amount of stress hes been having could lead to ick and especially the armatus all your fish are pretty susceptible to things like that... get a feeding vid up sometime soon man. I'd love to see that tank at feeding time.

ok, everybody is withstanding the melafix well, no problems there, but i think i'm going to lose the datnoid for sure .... he doesnt swim anymore, and most of the time lays on the gravel like he's dead ... i want to euthanize him for his sake, but the spots seem to have dissapeared, so i want to see if the melafix might save him .... i've seen fish come back from the brink before, but i doubt it very much with this guy .... also added more salt ... tanks already at 83, and i cant go much higher because of the 2 goonch cats that like colder water ..... its just a waiting game now, and thanks for the help ... sucks man, losing any fish, but he wont die in vain because i've learned a lot from this situation ... feeding video will come in about a week when i take the melafix out, thanks again man

You have quite a stock list, where do you get most of your fish from?....I was also going to suggest placing a divider in the tank to keep the dorado away from the others, but you said that it seems to have calmed down with the bullying.I would keep that in mind in case things change for the worse though.

well, unfortunately last night i had to euthanize the little dat. He was just laying on his side barely breathing for the whole day, and i just couldnt take watching the suffering anymore. Plus i knew i had a 12 hour work day the next day, and didnt want him to pass, and then sit in the tank, possibly making others sick .... Everyone else is doing great, however, just need ths rest of my stubborn dats to eat shrimp. I'll leave the tank though, and let the melafix work a few more days, then hopefully early next week i'll do a waterchange, get my carbon filtration going again and be back to normal. Thanks for the help and advice, and some pics/vids will be on the way

yeah that was my other question... how well do the Goonch cats get food... seems like the other fish would get it all before they ever get a shot.... Also whats the growth/Behavior on the Goonches? And yeah man, losing fish sucks... I had my 8 inch Nile perch die a few weeks ago... really really sucked.

thats sucks dude, i grew nile perch from about 2 inches to 12 in about 8 months, then had to make a tough decision to get rid of him because he ate so much and grew so fast that he was scaring the hell outta my tigers. Knew it wouldnt be long till he ate them, so i sold him. Tough to do, cause they are another fish that have a great and unique personality ... mine didnt bother or chase anyone, just he grows so fast and isnt skittish in the least. To be honest my feedings arent that crazy cause i feed so often, at least once a day. I'm worried that they would all hurt eachother going for the same piece of food, i've seen the vampires injure other fish, those teeth are not to be taken lightly. Also by keeping everyone well fed it helps to minimize fighting, which is why i've had success keeping all these fish with no injuries and very minimal fighting. Just have to do a lot of water changes, which is fine with me. I usually drop silversides/smelt in 1 at a time until the tigers and vampires eat enough, then throw a fist full of krill down towards the 2 goonches, and since theres so much current by them some gets blown around and the dats, and tarpon eat the floaters, and the goonches get whats on the bottom. The goonches are actually insanely aggressive eaters, and to be honest are probably my next problem fish. They are growing very quickly and the size of their mouth could probably fit my smallest tiger already! However, although i've never starved them, or given them feeders, they dont ever eat fish, only krill and shrimp. They'll mouth a silverside and spit it out, or ignore it completely so hopefully they dont eat anyone. And i've never seen them act different with the water temp high, like mid 80's, but i dont think its right to them, so i keep it at 82. thats high for them and the dats, but a little low for the tigers. I been thinking of boosting it in the morning and afternokn up to 86, but then dropping to 79-80 at night to act like a normal outside river would, havent done that yet though. And dont get me wrong, seeing these boys eat is AWESOME! its just not a feeding frenzy like you would think with these type of fish cause i keep them so well fed. Ok, novel #2 complete! haha

another note about the goonches, most catfish seem dopey to me, the way they swim etc.... but not these guys, they are fast as hell, and insanely aggressive as far as finding food and getting it. There body and fins act like a huge spiders web and when the smallest piece of krill brushed against them, they spin around and snap it up in the blink of an eye. Also, when the lights are off i'll catch them all over the tank, sideways against the front glass, in the bubble stream at the top, and mostly literally nose touching the font of the watercirculator i have on the bottom. The big goonch, probably about 14 inches now, will rest his belly on about a 1 inch thick piece of wood so that he can surf in the magnum 5's current and loves it. So funny. Another note, many catfish look like a slug or eel, but not these guys. They look like an airplane, and are just as graceful as far as swimming when they need. Really awesome fish, that i will never part with ... In fact i want MORE!!!!!! i think i need to go to fish anonymous, if there is such a thing .... better than some other addictions though! haha
