The store I work at has one left. It's 5" or so. I can snag it tomorrow. Should I? How fast do they grow and to what size?

How about growth rate? Can I grow out the small one for a few months in a 29, then move it to a 55 for another few? Let me know.

I would say go for it if you're sure to get a 55 in a few months. It should be fine for a while in a 29.

Why not?

frankly i've only seen one other pic that looks like the two specimens of 'Gold Dust' in the Aqualog book (which is the first and only source i'm aware of that uses that name). All of the other 'gold dust' out there to me really just look like buettikoferi and aren't the same as what the Aqualog book calls 'gold dust'. i just think stores are using the name 'gold dust' too liberally to refer to good ol' buettikoferi.

having said that, i agree with icthy that even the two specimens in the Aqualog book are likely just variant of buettikoferi.

btw buettikoferi don't seem to grow incredibly fast, so you should be fine.

They actually have both right now I believe.

yes ive seen this before where lfs has both 'gold dust' and buettikoferi. sorry let me clarify. i didn't mean the stores are using the name 'gold dust' instead for all buettikoferi. What i meant was what they're calling 'gold dust' should really be just called buettikoferi, along with the rest of the buettikoferi they have.

i've seen pics of what are called 'gold dust', but they look more like buettikoferi than the 'gold dust' specimens in Aqualog. Since Aqualog author coined the term 'gold dust', thats why i take his description/pics as what it should look like, and so far only seen one pic that looks like those. Now in the end 'gold dust' is probably just a color variant of buettikoferi, but thats beside the point.

don't get me wrong, buettikoferi/gold dust are one of the prettiest bichirs around. you should definitely get one. their growth don't seem to be particularly fast, so your upgrade plan should be fine.
